After the Storm
They hear it on the night of the half moon, and nobody in the village sleeps afterwards. In households boringly content to outside appearances, furious words are spoken. The ghosts of that anger will hang in the air for a long time, greasy and mean, like electricity ready to spark.
Of course, jittery and nervous, they laugh it off the following morning. Gathering in the streets to convince one another that the sound was merely the result of a freak wind, howling through the darkness.
But you know what it truly was, and you know why you called it here. A little thing about facades, behind-closed-doors, and petty revenge. I have no idea what "it" is myself, but as long as the you in the story does, that's fine.
