A Friendly Visit (Oct 2022)
Knock Knock
The day's blizzard had eased at nightfall, leaving a sky clear and star stabbed.
He was dozing by the fire, lulled by the crackle of the logs succumbing to the flames, when the knocking came. A soft rapping on the cabin door.
"Who's there?" he called.
"A freezing passerby who would warm themselves at your hearth," came the reply, the voice hoarse yet mellifluous.
Intriguing.
He opened the door to the drifts outside. "OK," he allowed, "but you can't stay long."
"Don't worry," replied the wolf, "I won't be a moment."
It smiled, and its teeth gleamed in the moonlight.
A more recent effort, which owes a large debt to the Grateful Dead song "Dire Wolf".
